A-2 Troubleshooting Guide
A.1 Procedure for Cisco Model IGS (Prior to Rev. 9.1)
To recover the password, proceed as follows:
1. Connect a terminal or PC to the COM port of the router.
NOTE: On some routers, the COM port may be labeled CONSOLE.
2. Power down the router.
3. Record the original settings of the hardware configuration register dipswitch. (Refer to the router
documentation for the location of the switch.)
4. Set switch 8 to the ON (or closed) position and set switches 1 through 7 to the OFF (or open) position.
5. Power up the router.
6. At the terminal or PC, press Return until the
Test-System> prompt displays.
7. Type in:
enable at the Test-System> prompt.
Press Return.
Type in:
show config at the Test-System> prompt.
Record the password(s).
8. Power down the router. Then return the hardware configuration register dipswitch to its original settings.
9. Power up the router.
